Overview

i9media worked with Rusty Surfboards for well over a decade, starting the relationship back in 2007 with a small ad placement. 

Over the years, i9media has become more involved with the brand with each passing year cementing the relationship between the two companies as more than just partners and more like family. i9media’s work has impacted the business in an incredible way, starting from no digital presence online to becoming fully integrated online through the website, ecommerce, email marketing, advertising, social media and more. When i9media first partnered with Rusty Surfboards the company had no digital presence aside from a basic website and a Facebook account of less than 1,000 followers. Once i9media got involved our team catapulted the brand in the digital space by adding a D2C channel through their online website, setting up and managing digital ad placements, setting up and growing social media accounts, designing and building brand assets and more. Today, Rusty Surfboards has a digital presence that expands globally largely due to the efforts and strategies put in place by the i9media team.

For over ten years, i9media has been the leading force behind Rusty Surfboards’ digital presence. i9media has built and modernized the Rusty website three times over, keeping up with the latest features and trends in branding and ecommerce. The website was one of the finalists in the Bigcommerce Awards for the ability users have to build and customize their own surfboards online. That website build was accompanied by a complete overhaul of all the digital touch-points, starting with the website then expanding into new newsletter templates, lead acquisition forms, social posts, advertising and more. Because of i9media’s work, the Rusty Surfboards website has become the top sales driver for the brand.

Before i9media got on board Rusty Surfboards had no ecommerce store set up for direct to consumer sales. After partnering with Rusty Surfboards, one of the first projects was to get the brand set up on an ecommerce platform that was capable of doing D2C sales. Fast forward to a little over a decade and i9media’s work to implement e-commerce optimization tools and strategy has been a major benefit for the Rusty brand. Specifically, e-commerce revenue skyrocketed, going from 0% to 90% of the overall brand revenue.

Prior to i9media’s management, CARVE struggled with attribution and ROI on digital ads and ad spend was not providing any lift to online sales. Today, thanks to the partnership with i9media, CARVE USA has a robust infrastructure for online ads. Advertising takes place on multiple platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Google), and it is carefully monitored and adjusted to achieve optimal results. In just one year, the average annual ROAS (return on ad spend) went from 1.7x to 3.4x, doubling on performance while spending less ad dollars overall.

Ten years ago, Rusty Surfboards had no digital ad accounts. Today, thanks to the partnership with i9media, the brand has a robust infrastructure for online ads. Before i9media, Rusty Surfboards had no way of communicating with their customers on a mass scale. Because of this, i9media set up Rusty Surfboards on a CRM platform, integrated it with their analytics tools and ecom platform and hit the ground running. i9media built templates from scratch utilizing the Rusty Surfboards’ branded logos and fonts, set up multiple automations whether it was a new subscriber welcome series, a post-purchase series or a regular campaign, i9media built Rusty Surfboards’ CRM platform from zero to now with roughly 20,000 contacts. And what’s more, these newsletters are the #4 highest source generating sales across the entire ecommerce platform.

Media Creation

Prior to i9media’s involvement, Rusty relied almost exclusively on its sister apparel company for media assets. Today, i9media directs and contributes to in-house photo and video production. These efforts are building a library of brand-owned content, which can be used in many different contexts and channels for years on end.

i9media’s creative capabilities have provided Rusty with many creative assets, such as catalog designs, website graphics, newsletter templates , ads for digital and print channels, posters and more. i9media’s in-house team of designers take care of all Rusty’s graphic needs whether it’s print or digital.

Asset Management

Before i9media, Rusty Surfboards had no online asset management platform set up to store and access digital assets. After i9media got involved the i9media team organized thousands of files that had been stored on hard drives onto the cloud and to this day continue to organize and manage all digital assets. Included in these assets are photos, videos, protocols, product info, website assets, catalogs, marketing packages and more.

Search Engine Optimization

Before i9media, Rusty Surfboards had no strategy or plan in place to work on their SEO and placement online for organic search. Through i9media’s SEO strategy and execution, Rusty Surfboards ranks #1 nationally for the keyword ‘custom surfboard’. Because of this, Rusty Surfboards has seen it’s custom surfboard business grow larger every year over the last several years.

Systems & Integrations

Before i9media got involved, Rusty Surfboards had a broken system with all their tech and data operating in silos. With i9media’s help, Rusty Surfboards now enjoys greater efficiency and analytics insights thanks to various systems integrations. This includes migrating the website/ecommerce platform to be on Shopify, a more optimal ecommerce platform, and using Cavewire, a specialized software in the cloud instead of local production software. In addition, i9media has worked to set up Shape3d, a software that allows the customer to build custom boards, all integrating with the Shopify platform. Furthermore, i9media has fully integrated Rusty Surfboards’ POS system with the Shopify ecom platform, setup their CRM on Zendesk and even helped setup Quickbooks Online to help with accounting. And to top it off, all of these software integrations communicate with each other so that analytics and data offer more business insights than ever before.
